Session Details

In the first episode of the Net Zero Naturally series, our sustainability experts will dive into global warming and what it means for ice rinks. The climate crisis has become a priority for municipalities and governments across North America, resulting in changing regulations and increasing pressure to reduce energy consumption and emissions. Our speakers, David Fauser and Bashar Naser, will bring you up to speed on what’s been happening in the industry, and provide an overview for an actionable plan to get your facility on the pathway to net zero.

The second episode is a closer look at an actionable plan to get to net zero, with a focus on refrigerant choices. Our speaker, Benoit Rodier, will share a concise methodology to achieve true net-zero refrigeration, and will review why your refrigerant choice matters, and the differences between synthetics and naturals like CO2 and Ammonia. He'll also explain how heat recovery and energy-efficient designs can considerably reduce an ice rink's emissions and energy consumption.

The third episode of the series is a continuation of how an actionable plan can get you to net zero. Benoit Rodier goes beyond refrigeration, and gives you a comprehensive view of the various ways in which you can reduce your facility's footprint off the ice, by harnessing green power. He'll dive into topics such as what heat pumps can do, and why energy sharing and green electricity are the future. You will leave with a clear understanding of what it takes to make your ice rink more sustainable, with the tools and resources you need to create your own plan to achieve your rink's net zero targets.

Governments across the globe have set ambitious goals to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) are offering funding programs to support communities across Canada and municipal governments, respectively, to help them adopt technology that meets this larger goal. Jonathan Berney will take you through the eligibility criteria, application process, and share the agencies that can assist you with energy readings and other criteria required.

The Visionary  
With close to 35 years of experience in the refrigeration industry, Benoit Rodier is a seasoned veteran and a go-to expert on natural refrigerant technology who is regularly quoted in leading trade publications. He is the Director of Business Development at CIMCO, a professional engineer, and a teacher who shares his expertise with the next generation of engineers, recognizing that they have a significant role to play in sustainability. He was an early adopter of, and is a strong advocate for, CO2 refrigerant technology, which will be used in most of the ice rinks at the 2022 Winter Olympics. He’s passionate about technological development and industry trends, and believes in the power we all have to make better choices for the future.

The Activist   
David Fauser is the Director of Sales for CIMCO Refrigeration, and has been with the company for more than 20 years. During that time, he has been involved in hundreds of local and professional new rink designs and retrofits throughout North America. David has a passion for ice sports and sustainability, and was instrumental in CIMCO’s decision earlier this year to drop recreational ice rink packages that use refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential from its lineup, because of their climate impact. He is a strong voice on environmental issues and legislation, and is a thought leader in the industry. He believes that there is a solid business case to incorporating net-zero and net-zero-over-time strategies to today’s ice rinks.

The Problem Solver  
Jonathan Berney, P.Eng., is the Ontario Business Development Manager at CIMCO Refrigeration, and has more than 16 years of refrigeration experience. He’s been involved in numerous game-changing green initiatives, including the promotion of CIMCO’s Eco Chill, the only ice rink refrigeration system listed on the Environmental Investigation Agency’s Pathway to Net-Zero Cooling Product list. He also helped plan the install of one of the largest industrial desuperheaters in North America at a Maple Leaf Foods facility, which used waste heat recovery to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions. In his role, he is actively pursuing net-zero technologies and concepts for validation and implementation in our market.

The Innovator  
Bashar Naser is a professional engineer and the Product Development Manager at CIMCO Refrigeration. He has designed many innovative CO2 and Ammonia-based natural refrigeration systems, and he works closely with customers on the life cycle planning for their equipment, helping them achieve net zero over time. He’s also knowledgeable about how to bridge the gap between environmental and financial sustainability, providing solutions with the lowest total cost of ownership for ice rinks and arenas, in municipalities across North America that are working toward a more sustainable future.
