Helping the environment while boosting sports and leisure in local communities

TORONTO, ON – Cimco Refrigeration (CIMCO), Canada's largest industrial refrigeration contractor providing turnkey ice rink refrigeration systems, industrial refrigeration design, construction and engineering, reached a milestone of building 50 CO2 ice rinks in North America. This marks a major advancement in CIMCO’s pledge to provide eco-friendly ice refrigeration options to communities throughout North America.

CO2 refrigeration systems provide sustainable solutions for ice rinks, with a low global warming potential (GWP) of 1 – much lower than most synthetic options. They provide the optimum balance of performance, efficiency and safety, and are ideal for both new installations and retrofits of existing systems. The majority of these 50 rinks were retrofits that replaced synthetic refrigerants and produced substantial energy savings of up to 50% over previous systems.

“As synthetic refrigerants are phased out worldwide, we need to look to the future,” said David Fauser, Director of Sales and Marketing at CIMCO. “With municipalities developing aggressive climate change targets, we want to offer better options that are sustainable from both an environmental and business perspective. Many of the systems that we replaced had not completed their natural life cycle – the choice of refrigerant proved to be a costly mistake, and we don’t want our customers to have to go through that. We feel good about CO2 as it’s natural, has minimal impact on the environment, provides superior quality ice and is not in danger of being phased out – ever, really.”

The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty that aims to eliminate ozone-depleting substances, which are also potent greenhouse gases. It has undergone nine revisions, phasing out CFCs, HCFCs, and finally, in 2016, setting in motion a legally binding commitment to reduce HFC emissions by countries throughout the world. HFCs are greenhouse gases with an extremely high GWP comparable to that of CFCs and HCFCs. This landmark agreement includes targets and timetables to replace HFCs with cleaner alternatives. CIMCO is committed to helping ice rink owners and operators identify the best solutions for their facilities that provide superior ice quality, higher energy savings and are environmentally sustainable.
