CIMCO is thrilled to partner with the Cape Breton's Canada Games Complex in their exciting renovation project. The upgraded facility will feature a newly resized ice surface, transitioning from an international size to a regulated NHL size. Additionally, the venue will undergo modernization to include fully accessible dressing rooms and an elevated surface to cater to sledge hockey.
The 76,000 square foot renovation and expansion of the Canada Games Complex broke ground in May 2023 and construction is scheduled for completion in December 2024.
Key Facts about the project:
GREEN TECHNOLOGY:
The use of green technologies and modern, energy efficient equipment installed include:
- New rink refrigeration plant, electric boiler, dehumidifier, digital meters.
- New electric Zamboni
- Waste heat from the refrigeration plant will be captured and used to supplement general space heating in expansion.
- New ventilation system with a modern dehumidification unit.
- New LED lighting system.
SOLAR POWERED ARENA:
- In 2020 CBU and the Verschuren Center completed the largest solar power installation on Cape Breton Island.
- 500 solar panels were installed on the roof of the Canada Games Complex, and the total capacity was 150 kW to help power the building.
- Excess energy will be exported to the Nova Scotia Power
- This solar system reduces greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 25 gasoline powered passenger vehicles per year.
This groundbreaking transformation will make the complex the first dedicated arena for female and para hockey in the country. It will proudly host the Cape Breton Blizzard Female Hockey Association, Cape Breton Capers women's hockey team, and the Cape Breton Sledgehammers sledge hockey club.
