How One Town's Ice Plant Replacement Is Reshaping Funding Decisions Across a Region | CIMCO

Why Sustainable Colling Matters More Than Ever

As global temperatures rise, the demand for cooling continues to grow. But according to Avipsa Mahapatra, Climate Campaign Director at the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), the way many cooling systems operate today is contributing to the very climate challenges they are intended to address.

For decades, refrigeration and cooling systems have relied on fluorinated refrigerants. While these substances replaced ozone-depleting chemicals used in earlier generations of equipment, many of today's fluorinated refrigerants remain highly potent greenhouse gases.

"Many of these refrigerants are thousands of times more damaging to the climate than carbon dioxide," explains Mahapatra.

Cooling plays a critical role in modern life, from preserving food and maintaining comfortable indoor spaces to supporting data centers, arenas, and industrial operations. However, Mahapatra emphasizes that cooling technology should not come at the expense of the environment.

The encouraging news is that climate-friendly alternatives already exist for many applications. Natural refrigerants and other sustainable cooling technologies are being successfully used in supermarkets, ice rinks, industrial facilities, and data centers worldwide.

According to Mahapatra, the challenge is no longer technological. Instead, barriers often come down to awareness and how organizations evaluate costs.

One common misconception is that sustainable cooling is more expensive. Mahapatra argues that focusing solely on upfront costs overlooks the bigger picture.

"Cost isn't just what you pay today," she says. "It's also the energy you'll consume over time, the environmental impact, and the costs passed on to future generations."

Looking ahead, Mahapatra hopes all cooling systems will become more equitable, affordable, energy efficient, and environmentally responsible. Her vision is a future where cooling technologies protect both people and the planet without contributing to climate change.

As organizations plan new cooling infrastructure or equipment upgrades, the message is clear: sustainable cooling solutions are available today, and long-term thinking is key to making the right choice.
